Bonner, MT – The husband and wife duo, slide virtuoso Derek Trucks and blues-soul singer-guitarist Susan Tedeschi, brought along their 12-piece Tedeschi Trucks Band and special guests, The Wood Brothers and Hot Tuna, to the newly constructed Kettlehouse Amphitheater. Whom they thrilled to a sold-out crowd. Brilliant and masterful collaborations were joyfully welcomed through the evening and a connective energy could be felt as the sun set gently in the mountains.
A band of over four decades strong, Hot Tuna opened the show and steamed through collections of their long career. Led by the constant of Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady, the group originally formed as a side project during their time with Jefferson Airplane. They bring familiarity and an opportunity to reminisce, while also engage the audience in the fun they have sharing music.
The Wood Brothers, led by siblings Chris (bass) and Oliver Wood (guitar), and including multi-instrumentalist Jano Rix, took the stage next and turned up the heat. This Folk-Americana band has the power to improvise and a groove that encourages the crowd to move. They clearly showcased a remarkable chemistry with one another and also connected the audience on a level that seemed to lift the entire environment into a larger sense of belonging.
Headlining the last night of this Wheels of Soul Tour 2017 installment was the Tedeschi Trucks Band. To the delight of die-hard fans and new journeyers alike, the 12-piece group delivered a wonderful mix of original songs and covers. The set included the strength of works such as “Midnight In Harlem,” “Will The Circle Be Unbroken?,” and “Bound for Glory,” as well as homage with the cover of “The Sky is Crying.” The audience easily became captivated by Susan Tedeschi’s beautiful guitar playing and her smoky, soft, but electric vocals, along with Derek Trucks’ master ability to slide and flow between his guitar strings in his own delicate and confident style. This last show of the tour, along the beautiful backdrop of the Blackfoot River, could be said to have inspired a truly magical night.
